Your student has recently become a sophomore, and their freshman year flew by for everyone! As a parent, you probably could not be more proud of everything your student has accomplished thus far, and you would like to see your student’s success continue. To help your student start next year strong, we have created a summer checklist for sophomores. Pass it along!

1. Try an Informational Interview 

Your student has likely chosen a major that they are excited about, but how much do they know about their future field? An informational interview with someone in the industry can help to educate your student on potential jobs, work environments and more. Job shadowing is another great way to accomplish this. If your student is unsure who to job shadow or interview, the Career Development Office is happy to help build connections!

2. Use Social Media

Another way for your student to learn more about their future industry is to follow companies and professional organizations on social media. Tuning into the trends and the political atmosphere of the industry will help your student to make sure their interest in their field will continue. Pro tip: Follow @IndWes on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to stay updated and connected to all things IWU!

3. Create LinkedIn and Handshake Profiles

LinkedIn and Handshake are two great sites that your student can use even now to build their professional network. Employers especially use Handshake to look for IWU graduates, so both sites are excellent networking tools. Your student can create a Handshake profile at www.indwes.joinhandshake.com.

4. Start Creating Sophomore Resumes

It is never too early start building a resume. The sooner your student starts creating their resume, the sooner they can seek help with editing it. The Career Development Office is always happy to help students create resumes, try practice interviews and more!
