CLEP Test FAQ

Is your student interested in earning college credits without enrolling in summer courses? Taking a CLEP test may be the answer! By taking a test, your student will have the opportunity to earn credit for required courses and save money in the process.   1. What are CLEP tests? 

CLEP stands for College Level Examination Program. CLEP tests allow students to earn credit for classes without having to take them during the school year or over the summer. If your student “tested out” of classes in high school, then he or she is already familiar with the idea. CLEP tests are available for registration through the College Board.

  1. What if my student fails?

If your student does not score high enough to earn credit from the exam, it will not affect their GPA. They can even try retaking the exam in three months.

  1. What CLEP tests can my student take?

Your student can take CLEP tests for a wide variety of classes. For example, your student can take the Chemistry CLEP test and earn credit for a Chemistry elective, or your student can take an Introductory Sociology or Psychology CLEP test to earn credit for PSY-150 or SOC-150.   1. Where can my student schedule a CLEP test?

Your student will need to make an account at https://clep.collegeboard.org/registerin order to register for an exam. After paying for the exam online, your student will print an exam ticket and get a Registration and Academic Services (RAS) approval form, which they can receive by emailing the RAS office at ras@indwes.edu. Then, your student will need to bring these two pieces of paperwork to the Center for Student Success to schedule their exam. Exams can take place Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.

  1. Where can my student take a test?

Your student can take his or her CLEP tests on campus in the Center for Student Success in the Barnes Student Center. Your student should prepare for the test to last 90 minutes and to arrive five minutes early. Your student should also bring photo ID with them.

  1. How much do CLEP tests cost?

The online registration fee for the CLEP Test will be $87.00. Your student will need to bring a $30.00 proctoring fee to the Center for Student Success to schedule their exam. Your student can pay this fee by cash, check or credit/debit card. If your student passes the exam, he or she will need to take a RAS payment form to Student Account Services and pay an additional $25.00 per credit hour that they intend to apply to their transcript.

  1. When will my student know if they passed?

When your student finishes the exam, they will see their unofficial score. In 2-3 weeks, they will be notified of their official score, which RAS will authorize.
